DEA Out to Catch NY Drug Dealing Docs

A press release issued last month by the DEA illustrates how they find and prosecute doctors who cross the line and become criminal drug dealers.

The case, out of Brooklyn, involves a neurologist who is accused of writing prescriptions for oxycodone for cash. The Long Island doctor was visited by undercover officers who were able to purchase prescriptions for the powerful narcotic when their symptoms didn’t warrant the drug. As well as this, the DEA says the neurologist was caught selling prescriptions to a patient at night, in a parking lot near the Long Island expressway. He is also charged with concealing evidence of his crimes.

In some cases it is difficult to prove whether a doctor, who is licensed to authorize oxycodone, is doing so because of poor medical judgement, or whether they are committing an outright crime. For this reason, police and federal agents will usually try to establish a chain of evidence that demonstrates criminal behavior. Part of this is when the doctor returned to his office, late at night, to alter medical records to conceal what he had done.

According to the report, DEA Acting Special Agent-in-Charge Plummer stated, “The abuse of oxycodone and prescription drugs has been on a rise throughout the nation. Law enforcement has worked together not only to enforce the drug laws, but work with our treatment and prevention partners to increase the awareness of the dangers of this addiction. This arrest proves that we are dedicated to investigate those who are charged with illegally diverting prescriptions and medications throughout our community for their own profit.”

Diversion – when a legal drug is moved outside of legitimate use – is an ongoing problem for the DEA. With the rise of prescription drug abuse, the sources for prescriptions are an excellent target. Without a doctor to write a bogus prescription, access to these narcotics is much more limited.
