Plattsburgh Ecstasy Bust

The DEA says that most of the ecstasy sold in the US is manufactured in the Netherlands and Belgium. This product is smuggled or mailed into the States. Although some is made here, the DEA claims the main supplies come from Europe. They also cite a second, not as important source country – Canada.

And that’s just what happened here. A woman was crossing into the US from Canada around 2am. She was driving a rental car and agents discovered 72,000 ecstasy pills hidden in the gas tank. While they didn’t mention how they knew the pills were there, it may have been a simple case of recognizing her nervousness. After all, at even a mid-range price of $20 a tab, that’s over a million dollars in product.

NYC is a main market for ecstasy – after all, it is a popular club drug. Technically known as MDMA, ecstasy elevates the mood and gives users a better experience in party situations. With the high demand for the drug here, customs officials keep an eye out for Canadian imports.

The woman arrested, Tara Haynes, is from Montreal. She’s being held without bond in the Clinton County Jail. It is unknown at this time whether she will face charges here or in Canada – in the US, that quantity of illegal drugs would be a Federal Court case with a penalty of up to life in prison for the amount she had. The minimum is ten years and with either sentence the fines can go up to $4 million. Ecstasy is in the same class of drugs as Heroin or LSD – pretty serious.

Perhaps her best bet is to turn state’s evidence in a cross border operation – however, with the news reports, it is likely any co-conspirators have long gone.
