Rochester Cocaine Supplier Busted

How much is a lot of cocaine? When the amount of drugs seized in any particular bust seems to keep climbing, two pounds doesn’t seem like a lot. But that’s a thousand one-gram doses of cocaine. And that’s how much Vincent Long, of Hammondsport is accused of supplying to the Rochester community.

The DEA’s New York Field office announced (along with the Steuben County Sheriff) the arrest this week. Long was stopped and the cocaine was discovered in the car with him. He was actually stopped and arrested for a sealed indictment handed down earlier this year by a grand jury. The cocaine found during the arrest will be an added charge. This was probably well planned by the DEA; the arrest was the result of a year-long investigation according to the press release.

Long, who is 48 years old, was arraigned and charged with four different felony counts, all related to drug possession or sale. The DEA is claiming that Mr. Long was running a “distribution network” in Rochester, although no other arrests have been made in the case so far.

What’s interesting in these cases is how damage to the supply side of the equation is newsworthy and heavily financed – it isn’t cheap to run a year-long investigation involving several police organizations. The cocaine, however, was going somewhere. There has to be a demand side as well. That means Rochester residents are buying the cocaine – and for every dealer, there has to be a huge pool of users.

With cocaine and crack use falling nationwide, it might be time to really address the addict side of the equation. Instead of easing off because the stats look good, maybe it’s time to give a little extra push and try to cut through the cycle of addiction – where cocaine use is transmitted culturally and within family and neighborhood groups. Or, we can just accept that today’s arrest of a mid-level supplier will just be repeated tomorrow, next week and next month.
